I don't know anyone who works at the Fountain Place tower in downtown Dallas. Least I don't think I do. Thankfully, I'm not sitting here today sifting through a long list of names of those killed by a terrorist's bomb this week, looking for ones I know.
But I will be soon. So will you.
The 9/11 Commission came to the correct conclusion years ago that terrorists, namely Al Qaeda, had been at war with us for some time but that we simply had not been at war with them.
They still are. But are we?
Oh, we're aware. To be sure, the FBI and CIA are.
I've lost count of the number of plots uncovered and squelched over the last eight years. But there have been six disrupted very recently. One in Philadelphia. Another in New York. One in Springfield, Ill. One in Denver. One in Quantico, Va.
And one right here in Dallas.
I just don't think we, as in you and me, are all that concerned. Why this doesn't scare the living crap out of everybody is mind-boggling.
This would-be Dallas bomber wasn't just a talker. He wasn't trying to hatch a plan.
He actually parked a truck loaded full of explosives in the Fountain Place building's underground parking garage, then moved to a secure location and attempted to detonate the bomb.
Fortunately, his bomb was a fake, provided to him by undercover FBI agents posing as an Al Qaeda cell.
"Scary" and "unnerving" are terms I've seen and heard used by people today.
Sorry, but I have to imagine that if that had happened several blocks away, in my building, I'd be a bit more than "unnerved."
No, the bomb didn't go off. No, there aren't several hundred funerals in the planning stages this weekend. So why the fuss, right?
How many more Hosam Maher Husein Smadis are there?
This guy was an illegal alien living down in tiny Italy, Texas. He was arrested 13 days before his attempt at "jihad" (aka mass murder) for having no driver's license and no insurance, yet was released the same day.
Did anyone ask if he was here legally? Did anyone check?
Probably not, because we certainly don't want to infringe on anyone's imagined "rights" by enforcing our laws.
Will the question be asked how he arrived in the U.S. two years ago? It wouldn't surprise me if he crossed the Mexican border.
Next to stories Friday about Smadi was one detailing our government's plan to cut border control agents along the Mexican border despite the fact that in the last year, agents have intercepted 530 aliens from "special interest" countries (those identified as countries that pose a terrorist threat), including three persons linked directly to terrorism.
You see, despite what far too many people want to think and say, illegals are not solely a bunch of harmless little fuzzy creatures simply seeking a better life.
And given the percentage of our border that remains unsecured, for reasons I cannot begin to fathom, I'd say the probability that many, many more Smadis have snuck through is rather high.
And if that's so?
An IRA terrorist once told a British official, "I only have to be lucky once. You have to be lucky every day."
We got lucky here this week, as did folks in five other cities. But what about tomorrow? Next week?
A friend asked me the other day, "What do you suggest we do? Live in paranoid fear? Never leave our houses?"
Not at all.
But a large number of people need to wake up to reality. This world is teeming with fanatics who want nothing more than to kill us. All of us. Conservatives and liberals. Black and white. Rich and poor.
And we seem hell-bent on making the job far easier than it should be, whether by supporting policies that make no sense or simply refusing to give a damn.

Her true intentions
It's said that liberals have never met a tax they didn't like. Well, folks, they're running out of ways to tax us.
Now, Nancy Pelosi wants a windfall tax on retirement income. And wait til you see why.
First of all, adding a tax to your retirement is simply another way of saying to the American people, "you're so darn stupid that we're going to keep doing this until we drain every cent from you." Because this isn't "taxing the rich" or whatever their misleading line is this week.
Pelosi wants to put a windfall tax on all stock market profits from your 401k ... or what's left of it ... not only to again help people who won't get off their butts and work for the life they want but ALSO THE MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS.
This is her DIRECT QUOTE:
"We need to raise the standard of living of our poor, unemployed and minorities. For example, we have an estimated 12 million illegal immigrants in our country who need our help along with millions of unemployed minorities. Stock market windfall profits taxes could go a long way to guarantee these people the standard of living they would like to have as Americans.
Ummm, first of all, these people ARE NOT AMERICANS. They are in violation of the law being here in the first place! The drain they impose on social services is a HUGE reason cities and states across this country are facing budget crisis after budget crisis and continue to have to raise taxes and fees.
And now Pelosi and the Democrats want to give them EVEN MORE of what we earn?
All I can do is shake my head at what's going on in this country. Not in Washington, mind you, because these people's agenda has long been apparent. It's in black and white for anyone who's paying attention to see.
What amazes me is the number of people out there who refuse to open their eyes and see it ... AND continue to put these people in power.
And yes, I realize that 300 million or so didn't vote for Pelosi herself. But the liberals they DID vote for gave her -- and her party -- the ability to destroy this country.
And they're well on their way.

Strength in numbers
I know a lot of you are familiar with NumbersUSA and its tireless work on immigration issues. For those of you who are not, I urge you to become familiar with them.
This is especially important now on two fronts. We've witnessed the Democrats' state of oblivion to public sentiment on a number of fronts in the last few weeks, and this is just the beginning. That they stripped E-verify from the "stimulus" bill wasn't surprising ... but it clearly signals what they intend to do with regard to immigration reform.
It should be infuriating to each and every one of you that Liberals refuse to protect jobs when American citizens are losing theirs at ever-increasing rates. At the very least, there should be widespread concern about the already horrendous drain on our tax base because of our continued failure to enforce immigration laws that already exist. That's only the tip of the iceberg, because when they start shoving amnesty legislation down our throats and opening our borders completely, that drain will become overwhelming and permanent.
NumbersUSA and its members played a tremendous role in stopping amnesty legislation twice in 2006, because it gave millions of citizens the ability to quickly send faxes to and provided direct phone numbers to our elected representatives, who "got the message" that the American people would not stand for the stealth legislation Congress was attempting to pass in the dead of night.
NumbersUSA stays on top of everything Washington does. And very soon, it's going to add individual state legislatures and the ability for us to quickly contact those people, which will help greatly in convincing states to enforce and/or adopt measures in the fight against open borders.

PORK: Not just for Americans anymore
The Senate just conducted a cloture vote, the result of which was 61-36. And all the wrangling done by "bipartisan" Republicans "acting in the country's best interests" last week? For naught, of course. The final Senate bill, after being pared down to under $800 billion, now will go to a floor vote at $19 billion MORE than the House version, which I believe was in the $850 billion range. That means the Libs tossed close to $70 billion more pork into the package ... for God knows what.
What's even more infuriating ... and what needs to be told to EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN is that in the House version, at least, an amendment was added to ensure e-verify would be required for any entity receiving this stimulus ... er, pork, I mean ... so that AMERICANS and ONLY AMERICANS would benefit. It passed the House, 407-2.
But in the Senate? Senate Majority Leader DEMOCRAT Harry Reid blocked the amendment, even though it had wide support from both sides of the aisle. So the Senate version of this pork-laden piece of cow manure won't even ensure that only American citizens benefit, even though only American citizens are paying for it.
At a time when the country is hemorrhaging jobs and unemployment is jumping at least a full point every month, when members of Congress and Barry The Great himself is bemoaning how bailout money is being spent in the private sector, this DEMOCRAT refuses to even allow a vote to ensure that OUR MONEY won't turn into state benefits and jobs for illegal aliens.
And I'll take any and all bets that the legislation signed into law by our joke of a president won't have that provision, either.

Doesn't get more assinine than this
Democrat senator John Conyers is apparently upset that someone "leaked" information about Barack Obama's aunt, the one wallowing in Boston public housing who's in this country illegally.
Conyers, from Michigan, is so upset, in fact, he's calling for an INVESTIGAAAAAAATION into who leaked what information.
Obama's aunt isn't only an illegal immigrant. She was ordered deported four years ago after her request for asylum was denied, so she is what the government considers a "fugitive alien."
So this Looney Lib is calling for a government investigation into information given about a fugitive?
Strikes me that if a fugitive is a U.S. citizen, his or her picture would just be slapped on a post office wall or printed in newspapers. And there'd be nobody anywhere bitching about the terrible breach of his or her privacy rights.

Vacation time, Part Deux
In my House/energy crisis blog yesterday, I may have made it sound like the House of Reps did nothing as the hours ticked away to their five-week recess.
And that, of course, is not the case.
On Thursday, after weeks of wrangling, Republicans managed to get the E-Verify laws extended for another five years. This law helps employers know they're hiring people who are in this country LEGALLY, be they Americans or those who have LEGAL documentation. They wanted 12 years. The Libs wanted two, anticipating a further shift in power would give them the opportunity in 2010 to completely wipe these laws away. Thanks to a public outcry (yes, Americans still care about illegal immigration) and a 24-hour fax/phone campaign by our friends at NumbersUSA, the Libs acquiesced and agreed to five years.
Well, now the Senate Libs (led by New Jersey's top crook Robert Menendez) are trying, before their recess begins this weekend, to make a stealth attachment to the bill that would add authorization to import 550,000 more foreign workers!
This when the latest data released Friday shows the unemployment rate now at 5.7 percent. Since December, 463,000 Americans have lost their jobs, and the rate seems to be poised to rise even higher.
You no doubt heard the latter numbers throughout every form of media yesterday. Highly doubtful you heard about the former, though.
These aren't corporate CEOs losing their jobs ... the people Libs love to hate. These are everyday, middle- and lower-class folks ... the people Libs pretend to care about.
The most troubling thing to me is, that many of those people continue in their blind support of Democrats who don't actually give a rat's patootie about them.
When is this country going to wake up? What's it going to take?

It's probably a little early for a lot of y'all to be thinking about November elections. But thought I'd pass these tidbits along.

Remember the election in 2006? Democrats wanted to "change" things in Washington, so the American people put them in charge of both houses of Congress. Here's a before and after sampling of what kinds of change we've seen:
BEFORE
1) Consumer confidence stood at a 2 1/2 year high;
2) Regular gasoline sold for $2.19 a gallon;
3) The unemployment rate was 4.5%.
SINCE THE LIBS TOOK CONTROL
1) Consumer confidence has plummeted;
2) The cost of regular gasoline has soared to almost $4 a gallon;
3) Unemployment is up to 5% (a 10% increase);
4) American households have seen $2.3 trillion in equity va lue evaporate (stock and mutual fund losses);
5) Americans have seen their home equity drop by $1.2 trillion dollars;
6) 1% of American homes are in foreclosure.
America voted for change in 2006, and we got it!
Remember, it's Congress that makes law not the President. He has to work with what's handed to him.
And now let's take a look at what our presumptive Democrat nominee says (about all he says, actually): "My friends, we live in the greatest nation in the history of the world. I hope you'll join with me as we try to change it."
Personally, I think we've seen enough "change."

Aussie rules
America needs a leader like Prime Minister John Howard of Australia.
You know, the last decade, give or take, we've been told how the U.S. needs to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of inclusiveness, national health care, energy policies where the farce known as man-made global warming is concerned, etc., etc., etc.
Well, the rest of the world may just be catching up to US. Health care systems are crumbling world-wide. The English, who three years ago adopted what is being pitched in this country as "Cap And Trade" (where the federal government decides how much energy every company, every individual is allowed to use and if they exceed that, they must buy "carbon offsets") now oppose what is little more than another huge federal tax by MORE THAN 80 PERCENT.
Most of Europe has been overrun by immigrants, legal and illegal, and infrastructures in those countries are stretched beyond the max.
Same thing in Australia, but last week, Howard finally spoke out. The nuts and bolts of what he had to say:
Muslims who want to live under Islamic Sharia law were told to get out of Australia , as the government targeted radicals last week in a bid to head off potential terror attacks. Separately, Howard angered some Australian Muslims by saying he supported spy agencies monitoring the nation's mosques. "Immigrants, not Australians, must adapt," he said. "Take it or leave it. I am tired of this nation worrying about whether we are offending some individual or their culture. Since the terrorist attacks on Bali , we have experienced a surge in
patriotism by the majority of Australians.
'This culture has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly English, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language!
"Most Australians believe in God. This is not some Christian right wing political push, but a fact, because Christian men and women, on Christian principles, founded this nation, and this is clearly documented. It is certainly appropriate to display it on the walls of our schools. If God offends you, then I suggest you consider another part of the world as your new home, because God is part of our culture.'

State of our union
President Bush, as most of us know, delivered his final State of the Union address Monday night. Three things happened, which happen during pretty much every State of the Union address.
1. The president's party stood and applauded a lot.
2. The president laid out a lot of issues he deems important.
3. The fat lush posing as a senator from Massachusetts fell asleep five minutes into the speech.
But I'm not here to talk about Ted Kennedy.
GW talked a lot about two things in his address: the economy and Iraq. I watched more because I wanted to see what he had to say about the former than the latter, which is hardly even an issue anymore.
Two things struck me. First, this economic stimulus package. Sure, I'd like the government to give me back a few hundred dollars that was my money to begin with. I'm sure there are few among us who will tear up that check. But all the wrangling seems to be about who gets what, if any, and how much when this amounts to a piece of masking tape over a crack in a water pipe.
Yes, the economy gets a boost as people run out to spend their $300 or $600 or whatever. And after the money's spent?
Want to boost the economy? How about reining in at least a handful of the many confiscatory regulations on businesses? Try announcing the suspension of federal taxes on each gallon of gasoline. Talk about stopping inflation in its tracks. Or how about, instead of giving me back a few hundred dollars of my money now, we immediately institute a 5 percent across-the-board reduction in federal income tax? That way, we keep more of our money each and every month instead of this one-time, hide-and-go-seek ploy.
Of course, to do any of that, our federal government would have to begin practicing what each and every one of us supposedly must do to maintain a roof over our heads: Fiscal responsibility.
GW also said in his address that he would not allow this stimulus package to pass his desk if it contained the usual pork. He also said he would issue an executive order to stop discretionary spending on projects that are slipped by the thousands at the last minute without a word of debate or discussion into every bill Congress approves.
These are also known as "earmarks" ... something we all heard a lot about from Libs running for Congress 18 months or so ago. They accused Republicans of running our federal deficit through the roof with this kind of spending, even though they were as big a part of the problem. They vowed to put a stop to it, and the voters swallowed it hook, line and sinker.
And in the year since Democrats have been in control of the House and Senate, earmark spending has increased. Not only that, but when word filtered down today (Monday) that the president was going to issue such an executive order, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid (the House and Senate Lib majority leaders, in case you're not sure) went ballistic.
I applaud GW for taking a stand. I'd also like to give him a swift kick in the fanny for waiting so long to wield the veto pen, but that's another story.
One other part of his address with which I want to take issue is immigration. Plugging the holes in the dam is the first part, of course. Bravo to that, although let's build the freaking fence already. The money was approved for that, what? Three years ago? And we've doubled the number of border guards, apparently. Now how about we take off their handcuffs and allow them to do their jobs?
But I leave the Bush Reservation when he gets to what we do with the millions of illegal immigrants already here. Politicians, GW included, like to use words like "compassion" and "reasonable."
Here's reasonable: Enforce our freaking laws.
People here illegally need to be dumped back wherever the hell they came from. There have been millions upon millions of people who have come to this country and gone through a process. There are millions more waiting in line, doing it the way it's supposed to be done.
The American people spoke loud and clear ... wielded their veto pen, so to speak ... when GW, a handful of RINOs (including John McCain) and the Libs attempted to back-door three separate amnesty bills on us in the last year and a half.
I say it's high time Washington listens to us for a change.

Heard a sound clip today from Teddy Chappaquiddick whining about how those in opposition to his amnesty bill want to do nothing about immigration ... have nothing to offer, no ideas ... and how the status quo isn't working ...

I understand that he's simply offering up a talking point since actually defending this ridiculously bad piece of legislation would be impossible. And I understand that a great many people who have no clue about the truth and don't care to take the time to educate themselves buy into his garbage.
Well, I'm rarely impressed by someone who simply says "NO! NO! NO!" without offering any kind of alternative thinking. And this really isn't brain surgery here, anyway, if you just think about it. So here's an idea on how to fix what's broken, cause Kennedy's right about one thing: The status quo is not working.
So ...
How 'bout we start enforcing the LAST piece of legislation that Kennedy helped usher into law 21 years ago? How about enforcing the immigration laws this country has had in place for more than a century? These people wonder why so many are against this legislation ... well, HELLO! Why the hell do we need NEW laws when we've already demonstrated the fact that we have NO intention of enforcing the OLD ones?
They ... the pro-amnesty crowd ... say that with this legislation, the first order of business is going to be securing the borders. Oh? How? Maybe approving a couple of billion dollars to build a fence? Nope! We already did that ... more than two years ago. Anyone see a fence? Hire more border patrol agents maybe? Why? The ones we have are so hamstrung by "rules of engagement" that they might as well be scarecrows.
Wanna fix the problem? First, stop the leak. Close the damn borders. Hire as many agents as are needed and LET THEM DO THEIR JOB. Build the fence. Set up electronic monitoring. It CAN be done. We have the technology, people.
Second, set up a reliable identification system for guest workers, who would be required to go through a LEGAL process in order to work here. We have all kinds of identification systems in place for AMERICANS ... so many, in fact, that we probably don't even notice them anymore.
And as a sub-category, unleash the wrath of an angry pit bull on employers who break the law. I heard a caller on a local talk-radio show the other day saying that in his business, he almost exclusively employs undocumented workers. Why? Because it's cheap labor, saves him tens of thousands of dollars, and if he's caught, he pays a pittance of a fine. Now, if he faced jail time, he said, he'd be moved to obey the law. This is like the guy who grosses hundreds of millions of dollars a year illegally dumping toxic waste and if he's caught, the MAXIMUM fine is $50,000. Think the "risk" is worth it to him?
Third, put a stop to this "sanctuary city" B.S., require documentation the same way employers would have to for ANY social service or to apply for a driver's license, etc. ... and for God's sake, DEPORT any non-citizen found guilty of breaking our laws. Why does every other country on this planet do that and we can't?
They ... the pro-amnesty crowd ... say there are too many illegal immigrants here to deport. Well, first, there wouldn't be that many had we been enforcing the law all these years. And if we start to do so, we won't have to deport nearly as many as there are, because a great number will get in line and follow the rules just like everyone else who's come to this country throughout its history.

Farmers Branch revisited
It's been a while since I blogged about a Dallas suburb, Farmers Branch, whose mayor proposed and its city council passed ordinances aimed at curbing the growing strain on its resources by an influx of illegal immigrants. Among the ordinances was a law that would prohibit apartment complexes and individuals renting any kind of property from doing so to illegal immigrants.
I predicted then (although it was a fairly easy prediction to make) that ACLU attorneys would descend upon the city like vultures on a fresh carcass by the side of a country road. And lo and behold, they did not disappoint.
What happened was that these Lib lawyers, with all kinds of Mexican-American association types standing behind them, forced the city to suspend its new ordinances until a vote on the matter could be put to the public at large.
That vote occurred over the weekend. And by a 68 to 32 percent margin, the taxpaying citizens of Farmers Branch voted to uphold those ordinances.
Now, this ordinance was not aimed at Hispanics in general, so there are no Fair Housing laws being trampled upon. The ordinance didn't even apply to those here on some type of LEGAL visa. It applied only to those who have thumbed their collective noses at this country's laws and processes, which millions of immigrants have LEGALLY followed in order to work and live here and eventually become citizens.
But guess what? The Libs now don't care that the people also have spoken. Already, they're back in court, seeking a restraining order (that some activist judge somewhere no doubt will grant) to "protect the rights" of people whose mere presence in this country is ILLEGAL ... all the while trampling and spitting upon taxpaying citizens who spoke loudly and clearly with their ballots even though it should not even have come to that.
The moral of the story, my dear friends, is simply another in a series of sad tales when it comes to Liberals these days:
We the people elect those who run our cities, states and country ... same as it's been done for 230 years. Only now, when the Libs don't like the results of those elections or the way those elected officials exercise their constitutional powers, they resort to tactics ranging from fillibustering, in the case of presidential court appointments, to utilizing activist judges as a means to their end, as they're doing in Farmers Branch.
Because in the end, YOUR vote, YOUR rights matter very little, if at all, to these people.

Fighting back
Farmers Branch, a northwest suburb of Dallas, enacted through its city council a series of strict measures against illegal immigrants Monday. Among them: a requirement that apartment renters provide proof of citizenship or legal residency, that all city business be conducted in English only and an avenue for police to participate in a federal program that would enable them to check residency status of criminal suspects in custody and begin deportation proceedings in some cases.
Kudos to that city's leaders for having the guts to assert that this country has laws and an established immigration system that desperately need to be enforced.
Now comes the fight. Opponents, including the anything-America-loathing ACLU, vows to drag the city into federal court. And this is where everyone's vote in national elections comes into play. The president and Congress determine who sits on federal benches. Will Farmers Branch opponents find a liberal federal judge who will say the city does not have the right to run its own affairs? I, for one, pray not, but almost every day in this country, judges make decisions on multitudes of issues that common sense tells the majority in this country are just plain wrong.
This one's worth watching, folks. If Farmers Branch rightly prevails, a trickle of this nation's cities that follow suit will become a torrent.
The state of Texas' elected representatives also have filed more than 300 bills for the upcoming session. Among them are proposed laws and/or constitutional amendments that would prevent illegal immigrants from benefiting from state services such as health care, welfare and education, requiring proof of citizenship to vote (we actually need a law for that????) and to require proof of citizenship or residency to receive any kind of business or occupational or professional license.
If you're of a mind, let your state congressional leaders know you're watching. I certainly am.

The president and Congress determine who sits on federal benches. Will Farmers Branch opponents find a liberal federal judge who will say the city does not have the right to run its own affairs? I, for one, pray not, but almost every day in this country, judges make decisions on multitudes of issues that common sense tells the majority in this country are just plain wrong.
This one's worth watching, folks. If Farmers Branch rightly prevails, a trickle of this nation's cities that follow suit will become a torrent.
The state of Texas' elected representatives also have filed more than 300 bills for the upcoming session. Among them are proposed laws and/or constitutional amendments that would prevent illegal immigrants from benefiting from state services such as health care, welfare and education, requiring proof of citizenship to vote (we actually need a law for that????) and to require proof of citizenship or residency to receive any kind of business or occupational or professional license.
If you're of a mind, let your state congressional leaders know you're watching. I certainly am.
