Let's go for a ride

Was reading a friend's blog ... reading back a ways since I hadn't communicated with this person for a while. Catching up, you might say. Attempting to see something that long had seemed hidden, either by their choice or by my inability or unwillingness to understand.

The subject of one particular entry was happiness and self-confidence.

I began to think about how I've come to the point in life where I see happiness as an awakening. It truly is a choice to me. It's easy and natural to be happy when times are good, just as it is easy and natural to sigh in the face of adversity. It actually takes effort to smile through difficulty AND to lament victory. So are we settling for what comes natural? Or do we make the choice to do otherwise?

Life takes us all on unique paths with the only common denominators being highs and lows, bumps and smooth sailing. Because no two paths are the same, the ride for some may well be more joyous on its face, while for others, the potholes seem neverending.

The choice is rooted in how we approach the ride, what we allow ourselves to experience along the way. Therein lies the confidence that while the path is smooth, we can permit beauty and serenity to consume us rather than imagine obstacles that don't exist or wallow in the belief that around the next corner, one may lie in wait; and when an approaching bump or crevice does appear, we grab hold, relishing the challenge of eclipsing the ordinary with the knowledge that we may well fall but we absolutely possess the power to bounce back up, aspiring to again bask in the warmth of calm.

The choice exists because your ride is your own; mine belongs to me.

I say enjoy the ride.
